With any generation of explorer your biggest road block is going to be the lack of aftermarket. I have some friends who set all the camping gear, galley and fold out tent on a small single axle trailer I guess you know where you want to go and the kind of trails so i can't recommend anything specific in. I’m a “run what your brung” kind of guy when it comes to overlanding, but i just want to hear why you chose the explorer and what your definition of a beast is.

I think an explorer would be the perfect vehicle for this kind of thing I want to find one with the v8, as i love the 5.0l. For strictly overlanding, the explorer is actually not bad, as long as you don't go international (parts availability) I highly recommend f350's mod of rancho quicklifts

The 2002 is considered one of the worst vehicles (with regards to reliability) ever.
